Port of Spain, July 19, 2011:

The Ministry of Health cordially invites all members of the public to come to its “National Wellness Day - The Healthiest Day in the Nation’s History” which will be held on Sunday August 12th 2012 from 11am to 6pm at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain, opposite to the Memorial Park. The National Wellness Day is part of the Ministry’s ongoing ‘Fight The Fat’ programme and its signature event in observation of Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th Anniversary of Independence. Admission is FREE!

The National Wellness Day consists of three (3) main activities

  • A “Fight the Fat Trini Food Makeover”, which is a healthy cook-out competition promoting healthy cooking recipes and methods
  • A “Fight the Fat Wellness Fest”, providing FREE health screening checks and exercise in a fun-filled environment geared toward the whole family,
  • A “Fight the Fat 5k Walk/Run” to end the day.

Fight the Fat Trini Food Makeover

The Fight the Fat Trini Food Makeover is a healthy eating cook-out competition from 11am to 6pm. The Fight the Fat Trini Food Makeover aims to encourage nationals to learn to prepare healthy, low fat versions of popular local dishes. Basic infrastructure will be provided to participating teams from several Ministries, State Enterprises and the corporate sector. All teams must provide their recipes on the day of the event. Judging starts at 4pm using seven categories of one-pot meals, Indian cuisine, vegetarian, meat dishes, cutters, blue food, and healthy food for children. There will be lots of entertainment with participating teams competing for exciting prizes.

12:00pm to 6:00pm

Fight the Fat Wellness Fest

The Fight the Fat Wellness Fest will be from 12noon to 6pm and visitors to the many booths can take advantage of FREE health screening checks for Body Mass Index (BMI), Blood Glucose/Sugar, Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, HIV, Pap Smear and Breast health. There will also be healthy nutrition demonstrations, healthy food preparation displays and the promotion of back yard gardening.

For those persons wishing to get in a bit of physical activity in a fun-filled environment geared toward the whole family, there will be several options available including spin bikes and a rev-a thon, as well a Youth Activity Zone with skip; moral; sway; hopscotch and BMX bike rides. An aerobics burnout consisting of fun aerobics, dancercize and zumba fitness gets on the way from 5pm. Throughout the Wellness Fest there will be exciting free product samples, prizes, lots of giveaways and entertainment by top artistes.

4:00pm to 6:00pm

Fight the Fat 5k Walk/Run

Free registration for the Fight the Fat 5k Fun Walk/Run will be from 12pm till 4pm. National Wellness Day T-Shirts will be given out to the first 4,000 registrants. There will be an aerobics warm up from 4:15pm before the start of the 5k at 4:30pm. Participants can enjoy additional entertainment after the prize distribution at the end of the 5k.
