Message from the Minister of Health in commemoration of

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2018

Minister of Health

I join the worldwide community to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Every year, the month of October is used to bring issues related to Breast Cancer Awareness to the forefront. Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women across developed and developing countries. It remains the most widespread female cancer in our country accounting for almost one third of all cancer cases in women. This means that every woman has a 1 in 9 risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. At the Ministry of Health, we remain committed to providing the necessary information and education to facilitate prevention, early detection and cutting edge treatment.

Although research and other advances have occurred, there still remains insufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer. Therefore, I encourage women to conduct regular self checks and to be screened by their healthcare provider.  Remember, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When this cancer is discovered early, and once adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is an excellent chance that the disease can be effectively treated.

I therefore encourage you to live healthy lifestyles, exercise and improve your diet in order to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. In order to encourage healthy habits that reduce the risk of cancer, the Ministry of Health has made significant advances towards improving policies and programmes as part of our national cancer control plans.

The Ministry of Health continues to support our women by doing our part to ensure that adequate information and facilities are available to test for and treat the disease. A healthy woman ensures a healthy generation, creating a Healthy Me, a Healthy You and a Healthy Trinidad and Tobago.
